| The Basics |
Character Name: Seamus Aidan Finnigan PB: Matt Damon Age: 20 Birthday: November 1, 1979 Wand: elder with a single augurey feather House in School: Gryffindor Bloodline: Half-blood (Muggle father, witch mother) Political View: Loyal to Dumbledore, member of Dumbledore’s Army, worked for Order of Phoenix during the recent unpleasantness |
| Appearance |
Height: 5’ 10” Weight: 180 Eyes: blue Hair: sandy Build: fit Dress Style: Seamus prefers casual dress, but owns appropriate robes for formal occasions and keeps muggle clothing back in Kenmare, Ireland to wear on outings with his family. Not a clothes horse by any means, but he does have some taste and a little style. Basic Physical Description: Defining Marks: Several hairline scars as souvenirs of bar fights, having spent an inordinate amount of time in same. |
| Personality |
Seamus is nearly too easy going for his own good. He tends to choose the course of least resistance without taking the time to think about long term ramifications. He was all about “carpe diem” before the war, and that experience only intensified it. He generally believes that things will work out for the best. Until Dumbledore’s death, he would have considered the loss of the Quidditch season the biggest casualty of any war. He generally ignores and despises politicians as worthless “cute hoors”. Except for dealing with enemies during the war, Seamus has yet to step out of his comfort zone. He has little or no ambition beyond finding a comfortable place to work and live in the wizarding world. His heart is in the right place, but he tends to let things happen until something pushes him to take action. He rose to the occasion with Dumbledore’s death and his war service, but whether he can translate those experiences into a more rewarding life after the war remains to be seen. He is generally optimistic, and used this trait to hide his anxiety and fears during the war years. Dating muggle women is definitely a cop out for him. It allows him to avoid both commitment and the additional challenges being with a witch could present. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert: Seamus is an extrovert. He is outgoing, friendly, smiles a lot, loves to laugh, makes friends easily and enjoys people in general and most witches and wizards in particular. He prefers the wizarding world, but is also comfortable in the world of muggles. He’s feisty, but not quick to anger, and tries to avoid and diffuse any potential “bar fights”, both at The Leaky Cauldron and at home. Still, there are times when the only thing for it is to join in and either finish it or help end it. Hence the scars. Boggart Would Be: Banshees. Seamus’ witch mother used to tell her son stories of magical creatures as bedtime stories when he was a very young child. He often dreamed of these creatures afterwards. While that was fine for a phoenix or a unicorn, the night he dreamed in vivid detail of the Banshees and their killing scream as they rushed towards him is a particularly bad childhood memory. He defeats this boggart by taking away its voice. Patronus Would Be: Seamus’ patronus is the Bear. He was able to produce it while in Dumbledore’s Army. The Bear is noted for its strength and stamina. It can help you find balance and harmony in your life, and the strength to do what is necessary. Seamus had to work hard in Dumbledore’s Army to be able to produce this patronus, just as he had to push himself in DADA to learn how best to protect himself and those around him during the war. It was during these times that he uncovered the strength inside himself and learned that he had untapped internal resources. |
| Sexuality |
Seamus is heterosexual. Upon his graduation from Hogwarts, he returned to his home and his family hosted a party for him at their pub. His two older brothers had planned to get him massively langered on Arthurs to set him up for his first sexual experience. However, their plans were tabled when he showed up several inches taller and didn’t seem to have any trouble attracting the local ladies So far, he has chosen his sexual partners strictly from young women in Kenmare. During the war he also had a more serious attachment with one of the locals, but recently ended that relationship and is avoiding visits home on account of it. He avoided any entanglements with witches during the war, fearing intimacy with someone whose loyalties were not certain to him due to his membership in and knowledge of the Order of the Phoenix. This was just an excuse he used to avoid involvement with women of magic. Now that the war is over, he will be tempted to expand his horizons. He checks out everyone who comes into The Leaky – a time honored privilege of barmen everywhere. |
| Lifestyle | Currently Seamus lives and works at The Leaky Cauldron. Seamus enjoys his job and works extra shifts if there is a need. In turn, the owner turns a blind eye on his too frequent trips to Diagon Alley in general and Quality Quidditch Supplies in particular. When the staff is preparing The Leaky Cauldron for the first customers and after the last one has left, you can hear Seamus singing Irish songs in his fine strong tenor. He misses the accompanying voices of his Da and brothers who all sang as they worked together in their family pub. The other staff members at The Leaky Cauldron are tolerant of Seamus’ singing due to his gregarious nature and willingness to help them when necessary. (Seamus avoided the Hogwarts Choir, preferring to spend his time watching Quidditch practice.)
Occupation: Barman at The Leaky Cauldron. He is particularly well suited to this position since he feels equally comfortable in both the muggle and wizarding worlds. Residence: Seamus lives frugally in rooms available to staff at The Leaky Cauldron. His small bedroom and sitting room are decorated primarily with action shots of all the best moves of the Kenmare Kestrals. The largest poster is one of the Irish National Quidditch Team winning the Quidditch Cup in 1994. His Irish harp (which he knows how to play) sits on a table. There’s a family photo of Mum, Da and the boys tucked away in his bedroom. Financial Status: The hardworking Finnigan family were well able to support Seamus at school, but now he is expected to find his own way in the world of Wizards. His mother Beven has already promised him the money in her Gringott’s account, as she has little need of it in her life in Kenmare. Seamus is saving much of his salary and tips towards the purchase of his own pub in the future, a plan his family approves and encourages. |
| Family |
Parents: Beven and Cian Finnigan. Beven is a witch who married Cian without telling him of her witch persuasion. She met Cian, a widower with two teenage boys, in Northern Ireland. She married him and persuaded him to relocate to the south due to the political unrest, bombings and occupation of the country by English troops. Cian agreed and the family purchased a pub and guest house in Kenmare, Ireland. Cian suffered a nasty shock when Beven told him about her talents – at the same time she informed him of her pregnancy. This had long term ramifications for both their marriage and the relationship between Cian and his son. Cian’s initial coping mechanism was deep denial. He basically turned a blind eye to Beven’s use of magic in their home. This lasted for several years until Seamus was a youngster and beginning to manifest some of his magic abilities. Until then, Cian had hoped for more children. Once it was clear that Seamus was a wizard, he gave his son completely over to his wife’s care and took steps to ensure he would not be outnumbered by the magical members of his family. Siblings: two older half brothers, both muggles Seamus is well loved by both parents, but grew up very much his Mum’s boyo. She loved the older boys well, but Seamus was clearly the spoiled favorite baby of the lot. She kept him tied to her apron strings for as long as possible. It wasn’t until he went off to Hogwarts that Seamus became independent of her. She continued to be a major influence throughout his early childhood, but as he reached his teens he craved more than a father figure and began to seek out Cian’s company. The three boys had all helped in running Finnigan’s Pub and Guest House, with Cian running the pub and restaurant and Beven overseeing the Guest rooms. Seamus grew up helping his Mum in the Guest House from a very early age, but after he turned ten his mother allowed him to help out in the pub room. This allowed father and son to develop a much closer relationship and gave Seamus a much needed masculine influence during his formative years. It also gave him the chance to become closer to his older brothers. They teased him mercilessly, but also were fond of him. The family is close-knit, warm and loving. Cian has come to accept his son’s status as a wizard – as long as he attends the local football games with the other male Finnigans when he is home for a visit. Seamus manages not to be bored by replaying the latest games of the Kenmare Kestrals Quidditch team in his mind as he watches football with his Da and older brothers. Male bonding at it’s best. |
| History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time |
Seamus stayed at Hogwarts for Dumbledore’s funeral, against the vehement wishes of his mother. When he did return home for the summer in 1997, he spent most of it working for his Da in the pub and working on his Mum to make sure he could return to Hogwarts in the fall to complete his studies. For safety reasons, his father would have loved for him to stay home, but realized that leaving the world of wizardry was not an option his son would seriously consider. His mother, frantic in her fears, steadfastly refused to cave in to his pleading and cajoling. Even his father’s support did not sway her. She was convinced that Seamus would become involved in the war if he went back to Hogwarts, and she was correct. She finally acquiesced to his wishes in August when he pointed out, as he dragged his trunk down the stairs, that as a 17 year old wizard, he was of age and would bloody well go where he wanted and she could just deal with it. The family managed a cathartic parting group hug and Beven and Cian agreed that their son should complete his studies and make his own decisions about the fight against the Dark Lord. Seamus returned to Hogwarts, studying DADA (E) with everyone else and pursuing his studies in Charms (E). He also took classes in Advanced Potions (A), Care of Magical Creatures (E) and passed his Apparition class. It was probably Seamus’ interest in Leprechauns that encouraged him to take additional classes in the Care of Magical Creatures. When he was younger, he had mistakenly assumed that the Kestrals had real Leprechauns in their care as team mascots. This, of course, was blarney. Still, it led him to discover a knack of caring for the creatures. During Hagrid’s absence he tended to “Witherwings”, earning Hagrid’s trust and thanks. Hagrid calls upon Seamus occasionally to apparate to Hogwarts for assistance with his magical charges (or just for company). With his more colorful roommates gone from Hogwarts, he spent a great deal of time in Hogsmeade and joined the Order of the Phoenix. The worse the times became, the more time he spent in The Three Broomsticks and The Hogs Head. He could forget about the war in a pub, even if it was the only topic of conversation in the place. He could and did take comfort in the resemblances to Finnigan’s Pub. It was the barman at Hogs Head who suggested he apply for a position as barman at The Leaky Cauldron after graduation. “Talk to them,” was the only explanation he gave, but Seamus decided to give it a go, interpreting the barman’s remark as a reference to his Irish accent. Seamus was training under Alastor Moody, when both teacher and student were amazed to discover that he had a proficiency and strength in Occulmency. Other members of the Order were delighted with the news and believed that The Leaky Cauldron would be a good place for him as well. Seamus started his new job at the end of June, 1998, reporting in detail on the comings and goings in the surrounding Wizarding shopping areas and the muggle districts close to Charing Cross Road. He reported on even the smallest movements of witches and wizards of interest to the Order. The DE were hardly blind to one of Potter’s former roommates working in such a public crossroads of the wizarding world. They regularly watched The Leaky Cauldron in an effort to keep a close eye on him. While he could defend against their attempts at Legilimency, he also had to become very adept at using pertinent nonverbal Charm spells and generally keep his more clandestine activities as hidden as possible. While he managed to successfully keep outright confrontation at bay inside The Leaky, he was called upon to use his patronus to defeat personal visits from dementors on more than one occasion. Seamus assisted the Order as well as he was able, and believes his information was useful in the fight against the Dark Lord. He was a foot soldier in the fight, taking orders from others as necessary, but rising to the need of the situation with the bravery of a Gryffindor. Called to assist in the final battle, he apparated immediately to a spot outside Hagrid’s Hut. He fought in the last battle against the DE’s, and after defeating several of the enemy, suffered under a cruciatus curse from one of the DE’s before they were all incapacitated by the death of the Dark Lord. He was not under the curse long enough to be seriously injured, but it’s not his favorite memory. |
